Richard Gray Gallery at Art Basel Miami Beach
Miami Beach Convention Center, Booth B2
December 4-8, 2019

Richard Gray Gallery is pleased to announce participation in Art Basel Miami Beach 2019, showing major works from the gallery's program by Josef Albers, McArthur Binion, John Chamberlain,  Ed Clark, Jim Dine, Jean Dubuffet, Sam Francis, Theaster Gates, Hans Hofmann, Alex Katz, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Pablo Picasso, Jaume Plensa, Richard Pousette-Dart, Ed Ruscha and Leon Polk Smith.

For Art Basel’s Kabinett sector, Gray will present Jim Dine’s seminal multi-media installation work, Four Rooms,1962. Radical for its time, Dine’s Four Rooms broadened the scope of what a painting could be, breaking free from conventional pictorial space. As described by art historian and critic Germano Celant, Four Rooms “… creates an environment — a place of implosion between painting and sculpture, furniture and art.  The result is a critical mass of forces that … calls into question a field of intimate energy in which is enacted the transition between life and death, personal and impersonal, painting and object, compatibility and heterogeneity, reality and illusion.”

Additionally, Gray is thrilled to support Theaster Gates’s participation in Art Basel’s newest sector, Meridians. At Meridians, Gates presents Dance of Malaga, a video work that furthers the artist’s exploration of performance and film. Dance of Malaga centers its storyline around Malaga Island, a still-uninhabited island located off the coast of Maine whose residents (of African or part-African descent) were forced to leave the semi-autonomous enclave in 1912. Across a series of non-linear narratives, the video addresses the complex and intertwining issues of race, territory, inequality and sexuality in the northern United States since the end of the Civil War.
