Gray is pleased to announce participation in ADAA’s The Art Show with a dedicated presentation of paintings by artist Jim Lutes. Often discussed in the context of Chicago Imagism, Jim Lutes’s characteristic style draws from an expansive set of sources that blend elements of West Coast Funk, Abstract Expressionism, and postmodern appropriation.

Lutes is overt in his juxtaposition of beauty and grit through representation and gesture. His compositions, created using egg tempera and oil, are characterized by smooth calligraphic brushstrokes built up over darkly comic tableaux depicting distended bodies, dingy interiors, and wistful images from memory and television. As the late art critic James Yood describes, Lutes’s paintings “are always assertions of the activity of painting and offer more than just a push and pull between its employ as a means and an end, between the depictive and the abstract, between flatness and perspective, into a kind of willful meander that becomes both formal and psychological.”

Gray exhibits at Art Basel in Basel, Art Basel in Miami Beach, Art Basel in Hong Kong, EXPO Chicago, Frieze New York, TEFAF New York and ADAA's The Art Show.
