GRAY is pleased to announce its participation in the 2023 edition of Frieze Seoul. GRAY will be exhibiting in the Frieze Masters sector of the fair with important works from its program of Modern and Contemporary artists including: Jean Arp, McArthur Binion, Jim Dine, Torkwase Dyson, Theaster Gates, David Hockney, Rashid Johnson, Alex Katz, Joan Mitchell, Jaume Plensa, Leon Polk Smith, Evelyn Statsinger, and Andy Warhol.
Included in GRAY’s presentation is an iconic beach scene by Alex Katz titled Saturday, from 2002. Depictions of the Maine coast are of the most celebrated and widely recognized subjects that Katz has consistently painted over his long career. More about capturing a moment in time or a sensation than they are about specific people or places, Katz’s landscapes create an immersive experience for the viewer. Significant for its scale, multi-figure composition, and bright summer palette, Saturday is offered for the first time in twenty years at Frieze Seoul.
GRAY will also exhibit a new painting from Torkwase Dyson’s Elevation series, titled Transverse-Black Lake_2 (Elevation), 2023. Working across the disciplines of painting, drawing, installation, and sculpture, Dyson's practice explores strategies for people of color to navigate, negotiate, and even negate systems of power in the built environment. In the Transverse–Black Lake paintings, Dyson addresses her birth city of Chicago and the surrounding Great Lakes. In addition to Frieze Seoul, Dyson will be participating in the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale: THIS TOO, IS A MAP, which runs concurrently to the fair.
From GRAY’s Modern program, the gallery’s presentation includes Joan Mitchell’s Untitled (Canada), 1975. One of the key figures of Abstract Expressionism, Mitchell is best known for her all-over style of painting and heavy impasto, a marker of the artist's late works. Mitchell’s Canada series began in 1974 during stays in Montreal where her longtime partner was building a home. Identified by their tonal palette and hues of Montreal’s winter landscape, the Canada series continued through 1976. Related works can be found in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Frieze Seoul takes place from September 6-9, 2023, and is located at COEX, 513 Yeongdong-daero, Gangnam-gu, 06164, Seoul. The first Preview day, which is invitation-only, will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. The fair will open to the public from 1pm on Thursday, September 7, 2023.

이번 프레젠테이션에는 알렉스 카츠의 2002년작 토요일이라는 그의 상징적인 해변 장면이 포함되어 있습니다. 카츠는 오랜 활동 내내 미국 메인주의 해안을 묘사해 왔으며, 메인의 해안은 그의 가장 유명하고 널리 알려진 주제 중 하나입니다. 카츠의 풍경화는 특정한 인물이나 장소보다 어느 한 순간 또는 감각을 포착하는 것에 더 중점을 두어서, 관람자에게 몰입의 경험을 하게 합니다. 크기, 다중 인물 구성, 밝은 여름 색상이 두드러진 토요일은 프리즈 서울에서 20년 만에 처음으로 선보입니다.
또한 토크와세 다이슨의 “입면도” 시리즈중 새로운 작품인 "검은 호수 횡단_2 (입면도)" (2023)을 전시할 예정입니다. 토크와세 다이슨은 회화, 드로잉, 설치, 조각 등 다양한 분야에서 활동하며, 지어진 환경에서 유색인종이 어떻게 권력 체계를 다루고, 협상하고 심지어 부정하는지 탐구합니다. "검은 호수-횡단" 에서 그녀는 고향인 시카고와 그 주변의 오대호(5大湖)를 다룹니다. 다이슨은 프리즈 서울 외에도 제12회 서울 미디어시티 비엔날레 “이것 역시 지도”에 참가할 예정입니다.
갤러리 프레젠테이션에는 또 그레이 모던 프로그램의 조안 미첼의 무제 (캐나다) (1975)가 포함됩니다. 미첼은 추상표현주의의 핵심 인물 중 한 명으로, 그녀의 작품은 전면적인 회화 방식과 과감한 임파스토 (impasto) 기법으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 캐나다 시리즈는 1974년 그녀의 오랜 동반자가 집을 짓던 캐나다 몬트리올에 머무는 동안 시작되었습니다. 몬트리올의 겨울 풍경을 연상시키는 색상과 색조가 돋보이는 이 시리즈는 1976년까지 이어졌습니다. 관련 작품은 뉴욕 솔로몬 R. 구겐하임 미술관과 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 미술관에서 볼 수 있습니다.
