Richard Gray Gallery is pleased to announce John Santoro: Slow Painting, an exhibition by Chicago artist John Santoro. The exhibition will be accompanied by an expanded publication that examines the development of Santoro’s painting practice with an essay by critic Alan Pocaro. On view July 14 through September 10, 2016, Slow Painting will open with a reception for the artist on Thursday, July 14 from 6 to 8pm. 

Slow Painting surveys Santoro’s recent landscape paintings, in which thickly applied and deftly worked masses of paint depict visions ranging from Hong Kong rainstorms and lakeside beaches to Southwestern mesas and urban backyards. United by an energetic brushstroke and a wry sense of humor, the paintings convey what Alan Pocaro, writing his catalogue essay, calls “honesty, integrity, and an abiding sense of the personal made universal.” 

John Santoro (American, b. 1963) has exhibited in Chicago and across the country for over two decades, with solo exhibitions at McCormick Gallery, Chicago, and Paul Thiebaud Gallery, San Francisco. Recent group exhibitions include shows at the South Broadway Cultural Center, Albuquerque, Tory Folliard Gallery, Milwaukee, Loyola University, Chicago, and the Chicago Cultural Center.
