Alex Katz, 10 AM, 1959
The Musée Matisse in Nice, France, presents Henri Matisse – Alex Katz: The Silence of Painting, an exhibition exploring the dialogue between the two artists, on view October 28, 2026, through January 18, 2027.
Conceived in collaboration with Alex Katz, the exhibition brings the artist’s work into dialogue with that of Henri Matisse, offering a renewed perspective on the museum’s collection. Spanning Katz’s career, from early works such as Nude (1951) to recent paintings including Lilies 13 (2025), the presentation features paintings, drawings, cut-outs, and prints from the artist’s studio.
The exhibition traces the enduring influence of Matisse on Katz’s artistic vision. Following his discovery of Matisse’s late paintings and cut-outs at Pierre Matisse’s New York gallery in 1949, Katz developed a sustained engagement with the French artist’s approach to line, color, and composition. Through their shared economy of form and attention to the visual experience of everyday life, the exhibition highlights a compelling connection between two generations of modern painting.
