McArthur Binion is featured in a summer group exhibition Palimpsest on view at Mariane Ibrahim from July 30 through August 24, 2024. Palimpsest sparks dialogue between hegemonic and emergent histories, private and public iconographies, mythologies, and fantasies.
Present in different text-based cultures since antiquity, the notion of the palimpsest has fascinated conservators, historians, and artists through modern history. Through paintings, installations and sculptures, the show explores the way that history is built by competing layers of personal stories, social events, and notions of spirituality and myth, that manifest themselves either explicitly or symbolically in the practices of the presented artists.
Palimpsest illuminates the dynamic interplay between visibility and concealment, memory, and imagination in our lives. By engaging in detailed observation, viewers uncover how these interconnected residual histories shape personal and collective narratives.
