To inaugurate the Albuquerque Foundation's contemporary programme, Theaster Gates presents the solo exhibition "The Ever-Present Hand".
The exhibition will feature a floor of iron-rich black ceramic tiles made with local craftsmen in Tokoname, Japan, and shown in Europe for the first time. Designed for the audience to walk on, it becomes the fundament for the artist’s own sculptures alongside a selection of pieces he personally curated from the Albuquerque Collection.
The Albuquerque Foundation, overseen by Brazilian studio Bernardes Arquitetura, is located in Sintra, Portugal. Conceived as a permanent home for ceramics from all corners of the earth, the institution hosts and displays the renowned Albuquerque Collection of Chinese Ceramics, one of the world’s most significant collections of Ming and Qing dynasties export porcelain.
