Theaster Gates

Theaster Gates is featured in Walker Design Triennial: Beyond Materialism, the inaugural design triennial at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on view October 17, 2026–February 14, 2027.

Guest curated by Joseph Grima in collaboration with Aslı Altay, the exhibition brings together 26 designers and collectives from around the world to explore the role of spirituality, emotional connection, and communal engagement in contemporary design. Moving beyond traditional considerations of function and material production, Beyond Materialism examines how design can address broader social questions and offer new ways of imagining the future.

Gates joins an international group of practitioners whose work considers the cultural, social, and spiritual dimensions of design. The exhibition builds on the Walker Art Center’s longstanding commitment to design and its capacity to shape how people experience and engage with the world.
