Installation view of Torkwase Dyson, Of Line and Memory, at GRAY Chicago, 2024.
Torkwase Dyson’s work is opening at Kunsthaus Bregenz in Austria in a major solo exhibition presenting a new, site-responsive body of work through January 24, 2027. Dyson transforms Peter Zumthor’s landmark architecture with a space-filling sculptural intervention, including two monumental black, sail-like forms that divide the museum’s ground floor. Created specifically for the exhibition, the sculptures—referred to by Dyson as “hypershapes”—extend her ongoing exploration of Black Geographies and the relationships between space, movement, history, and freedom.
The exhibition continues across the museum’s upper floors with new paintings, a stop-motion animation, and a soundscape. On the second floor, thirty-four small canvases function as a score for the sound installation, while the top floor presents large-scale paintings that draw on waterways and infrastructures as sites shaped by histories of colonialism as well as spaces of invention and liberation. Across these works, Dyson considers space not as a fixed or neutral condition, but as something shaped by social, historical, and political forces.
Torkwase Dyson (b. 1973, Chicago) lives and works in Beacon, New York. Her work has been presented internationally, including at the 2026 Biennale Arte in Venice, the 2024 Whitney Biennial, the 35th Bienal de São Paulo, and the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale. In 2025, Dyson was commissioned by Public Art Fund to create Akua, her first large-scale sound installation, in Brooklyn Bridge Park, New York. The Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition marks Dyson’s first solo presentation in Austria.
