In Art Basel's most recent episode of Meet the Gallerists, partners Valerie Carberry and Paul Gray discuss one of the gallery’s most enduring artist relationships. Through a series of exclusive video portraits and photos from the gallery's archives, Paul Gray tells the story of David Hockney’s first exhibition at the gallery in 1983, while Valerie Carberry recounts moments from his most recent solo show at Gray Warehouse in 2018.
“The history of this gallery has included artists of international stature from the beginning,” says Paul Gray. “What leads to a long term relationship with an artist is if there is that sense of mutual appreciation for the things that you contribute to each other’s lives and careers.” Speaking to his exhibition at Gray in 2018, Valerie Carberry recalls “there were hundreds of people under the age of 25 here, coming to look at his new work. And he was deeply moved that his work spoke to so many young people.”
